Taking a Pet on a Domestic Flight or Ferry to Jeju

A domestic ticket to Jeju does not use the import quarantine process, and it does not mean the airline or the ship will take the animal. Those are separate bookings. If the animal fits the cabin carrier on the airline printed on your ticket, flying is usually the shorter trip and the stricter box. If it does not, look at a ferry that sells a pet cabin for that animal, and read the ship, not the brand. Confirm with the provider before travel. Rules may vary by operator and by sailing.

The international pages on this site stop at the border. Pet quarantine is for animals entering Korea from abroad. Flying to Korea is the inbound international flight. Neither one is a boarding pass for Gimpo–Jeju or for a coastal ferry. Do not hand a quarantine certificate to an airline counter and expect it to reserve pet space.

Air: an airline product, not a national allowance

Visit Korea’s English page on traveling with a pet compares cabin limits across airlines. In that comparison, several carriers are listed around 7 kg or under, and T’way and Eastar Jet are listed at 9 kg. The summary does not always make clear whether the number is the animal alone or the animal plus the carrier. The same comparison shows some airlines listing cargo as well as cabin, and others listing cabin only. Those figures are a tourism-board summary of commercial products. They are not a statute, and they go out of date. Treat them as a reason to open the airline’s own rule, not as a body weight you can rely on. Open the Visit Korea page, then open the rule for the airline and the flight number you actually hold.

Space is requested. A seat reservation for a person is not a pet reservation. Many airlines want the animal added before the day of travel because the number of carriers in the cabin is capped. A few may still accept a request at the airport when a slot remains. Do not plan on the airport exception. If the dog or cat is over that airline’s cabin cut, cargo exists only when that airline sells it on that route, on their timeline. It is not a right you can demand at the gate because another carrier on the Visit Korea table offers cargo.

On board, the usual cabin condition is that the animal stays in the carrier, under the seat, for the flight. Taking the animal out because the box looks tight is how people lose the booking at the gate or upset the cabin. Short-nosed breeds are an airline health policy, not a Jeju special rule. Ask that airline. This page does not tell you whether your dog can fly.

Papers for a domestic hop

Import quarantine applies when an animal enters Korea from another country. It is not the process for a flight that starts and ends inside Korea. That does not mean the airline wants no document at all. Some ask for a health note or a vaccination record. Some, on domestic sectors, ask for little once the pet reservation exists. Ask the carrier on the ticket. Do not assume the international file is what they want, and do not assume they want nothing.

Sea: the rule is the ship on the ticket

There is no single pet weight for “the Jeju ferry.” Companies publish boarding notes per route, and the notes change. Two operators are enough to show why a blog’s one number is a bad plan. Read the page for your sailing, then call if the English and Korean notes disagree.

Hanil Express, on its own check-in pages

Hanil Express check-in notes for the Jeju coastal service say a dedicated cage is required. Without that cage, boarding may be limited. The same notes limit the trip to one pet per person, and they do not accept a sling bag or a pet stroller as the cage. Outside a pet room or pet zone, the animal stays in the cage. Dogs of 15 kg or more are still described as moving in a dedicated cage. If the dog is too heavy to move that way, the notes say to follow staff, use a muzzle and leash, and carry the cage. If the dog walks, a muzzle and leash are required. Aggressive animals, Tosa dogs, and dogs classed as 맹견 are described as not allowed on board. Those are company boarding notes, not a national ferry law, and they are not the same on every ship. Confirm on the Jeju coastal check-in page for the ship and the date. A note on one Hanil ship is not a rule for every Korean ferry.

Seaworld Express Ferry, on its own notices

Seaworld Express Ferry’s pet booking notes say a dedicated cage is required, and boarding may be limited without one. On Queen Jennuvia II, the shared pet-economy room is described as under 4 kg and one pet per owner. Animals at or above 4 kg are pointed toward other pet rooms, and those room conditions differ by ship. The 4 kg line is not the rule for every ferry in Korea. Check the room name on your ticket against the pet booking notes before you leave home. A dog that meets one Hanil note can be the wrong size for a Seaworld economy space, and the reverse can also be true.

How to choose when the animal is not small

Put the animal on a scale and put the airline’s cabin limit next to it. If the animal and the carrier fit that airline’s current cabin rule, and you can reserve the pet early, the flight is the straightforward public option. If the animal is over that cabin limit, do not buy the human seat and hope cargo appears. Check whether that airline sells cargo on that flight. If it does not, a ferry with a pet cabin sized for the dog may be the public option that still exists.

If the dog is also over 10 kg, rail and most express buses on the mainland will not be the connecting plan. That problem is traveling with a dog over 10 kg. A ferry ticket does not fix the train you need in Seoul the next day. If the animal fails the airline you can book and fails every ship whose pet cabin you can actually buy, you do not have a public crossing yet. The fix is a different date, a different operator, or not taking the animal on that trip. Arriving at the gate to negotiate is how people miss the sailing.

The return is the same gate

Book the animal in both directions. A cabin slot on the way to Jeju does not hold a slot on the way back. The weight limit does not get looser because the animal was allowed on the outbound trip. If you used cargo one way, ask whether cargo is offered on the return flight number, not just on the airline’s brand.

Leaving Jeju by air usually means Jeju Airport’s domestic checks, then Gimpo or another mainland airport. The ride from Gimpo into Seoul is a new operator again. That curb is covered in from the airport to your hotel.

After you are on the island

This page stops at the crossing. Cafes, trails, and pensions on Jeju set their own animal rules. The Jeju guide and the Jeju region page are where those places are listed. A listing is not permission. Call the site. Local buses are not the ferry you just left. Ask the bus company if you plan to ride with the animal outside the arrival port.

Boarding mistakes

  • Using the international quarantine file as if it reserved a domestic pet seat.
  • Buying only the human fare, then adding the animal at the counter when the cabin quota is full.
  • Treating 7 kg or 9 kg from the tourism comparison as the legal maximum for every airline.
  • Treating Seaworld’s under-4 kg economy note as the rule on Hanil, or on a ship you have not named.
  • Arriving with a pet stroller or a sling and expecting it to count as Hanil’s required cage.
  • Booking the outbound pet space and leaving the return until the weather looks better.

Checklist for both directions

  1. Name the operator and the flight number or ship, not just “Jeju.”
  2. Read that operator’s pet page the week you pay. Then again the week you travel.
  3. Reserve the animal, not only the person. Do it for the return at the same time.
  4. Match weight and carrier to the cabin, cargo, or pet-room product you were sold.
  5. If the product requires a hard cage, pack that cage. A stroller is a different object.
  6. Ask what document that carrier wants for a domestic sector. Do not invent one, and do not skip the question.
  7. Plan the mainland taxi or car on either end if the dog is over the rail limit.
  8. If the animal is unwell on the day, call a clinic before you haul a carrier to a gate. Use if your pet gets sick or injured.

Bottom line

Domestic Jeju travel is an airline booking or a ship booking. It is not import quarantine, and it is not automatic because you hold a human ticket. Cabin weights in the Visit Korea comparison differ by airline. Ferry pet rooms differ by ship, including Hanil’s cage notes and Seaworld’s smaller shared pet-economy rooms. Confirm the provider on your ticket before you travel, and book the animal both ways.
