Guides/After you land

From the Airport to Your Hotel with a Pet

The hard part often starts after the officer hands the papers back. You still need a ride that will take the animal, and a hotel that will open the door. Incheon after an international flight and Gimpo after a domestic flight are different leftovers. Do not use one ground-transport guess for both.

Incheon, after an international arrival

Animals that have just entered Korea go through import quarantine before they are ordinary arrivals. That inspection is the subject of the quarantine guide and of the official Incheon Airport quarantine information. That page is in Korean. This page starts when that process is finished and you are in the public area with luggage and a pet. The airline rules that got the animal onto the international flight are also finished. They do not decide which taxi, limousine, or train will accept you in the arrivals hall. Those airline rules are explained in flying to Korea with a pet.

Incheon is the main international gateway and it is a long way from most Seoul hotels. Budget time for the quarantine queue plus the ride. A hotel that will only hold a pet room until a set hour can cancel the room while you are still airside. Tell the hotel your landing time and that you are traveling with an animal before the wheels touch.

Gimpo, after a domestic flight

Gimpo is the usual airport for domestic flights between Seoul and Jeju, and it sits much closer to the city. Import quarantine is not repeated just because you flew inside the country. You clear the domestic arrival flow and you are immediately in a ground-transport problem. The pet rule you already satisfied was the airline’s rule for that flight. The bus, taxi, or train into Seoul is a new company.

If you are connecting from an international flight at Incheon onto a domestic flight at Gimpo, those are two airports and two pet questions. Finishing quarantine at Incheon does not reserve a cabin spot on the next airline, and it does not reserve a taxi at Gimpo. Domestic Jeju bookings are covered in flights and ferries to Jeju.

Do not make the airport railroad your only plan

AREX runs between Incheon and Seoul. The passenger conditions dated 26 December 2025 list animals among items that may not be carried, with an exception for a pet placed in a container so that it is not visible, and for an assistance dog wearing the assistance-dog mark and traveling with the relevant person. That exception is not a size chart, and it is not a promise that staff will accept every animal. Read the current AREX passenger conditions before you travel, and keep a taxi you have already checked. Express and all-stop practice can still differ on the day. Ask before you go down with the carrier, the suitcase, and a tired animal.

This page will not give you a last-train clock. Timetables change, and a time copied from an old article is how people miss the last departure and then negotiate a taxi at midnight. Check the day you land. City subway rules, once you are off the airport line, are the small-pet carrier rules in the public transport guide. A dog that does not fit a carrier should not be walked onto a train as an experiment. See traveling with a dog over 10 kg.

The taxi conversation at the curb

Say “pet, in a carrier” before the driver opens the trunk. Show the carrier closed. Acceptance varies by driver and by company, including app taxis. A refusal is common enough that the backup should exist before you leave baggage claim: a second company, a pre-booked pet-friendly car, or a hotel close enough that a short refusal does not strand you. Do not put the animal in a soft bag in the trunk with the suitcases. The animal rides where the driver has agreed it can ride, in a carrier you can watch.

Airport limousines and city buses that serve the terminals have their own conditions. Some will not take a pet at all. A rule you read for an express bus between cities does not transfer to the bus parked outside arrivals. If the company’s English page is silent, ask at the counter. Silence is not a yes.

Late landings

A night arrival stacks three separate risks. Rail or limousine service may already have stopped. Taxi drivers are choosing among many passengers and can decline a pet faster. The hotel may treat a late pet arrival as a no-show even when the booking said pets were welcome. Message the property with the flight number, the fact that an animal is with you, and the carrier type. Ask until what time the pet room is held. If they will not hold it, change the booking before you fly, not in the taxi queue.

The hotel can be the second refusal

“Pets allowed” on a booking site is not a promise about size, species, number of animals, or a late check-in. Some properties allow a small dog in a carrier and refuse a larger dog at the desk. Some allow dogs and refuse cats. Some want an extra fee paid before the key is cut. Ask those questions in writing while you can still change hotels. A listing on the Incheon or Seoul region page shows that a place appears in public visitor data. It does not prove the front desk will accept your animal tonight. Call the property.

If the desk refuses you, do not leave the animal in a bathroom while you argue. Ask whether another room category works, then whether they can name a property that takes pets at this hour. You still need a taxi that will do the second ride. That is why the carrier stays closed and the dog stays with you.

If the animal looks unwell after landing

A long flight can leave an animal quiet without that quiet being an emergency. Hard breathing, collapse, repeated vomiting, bleeding, or a possible heat problem is not something to sleep off in the hotel. Use if your pet gets sick or injured and aim the ride at a clinic that has agreed to see you, not at the hotel first. Quarantine staff at Incheon are not the overnight hospital for the rest of the trip.

What goes wrong between the door and the room

  • Planning only on AREX because a forum said carriers are allowed.
  • Memorizing a last-train time from an article instead of the timetable for that date.
  • Putting the pet carrier in the trunk with checked bags.
  • Assuming a domestic Gimpo arrival still needs the Incheon quarantine desk.
  • Assuming an international Incheon arrival can skip quarantine because the hotel is pet-friendly.
  • Telling the hotel there is a pet, and never stating the size, the species, or the arrival hour.

Curb checklist

  • Finish the import steps at Incheon before you shop for a train. Domestic Gimpo arrivals skip that import step.
  • Confirm a ride that has agreed to the pet. The AREX container exception is not the same as a confirmed seat on your train.
  • Check the timetable on the day. Do not trust a last-train time printed here, because none is printed here.
  • Keep the carrier closed and with you, not in the trunk.
  • Reconfirm the hotel: species, size, fee, and how late the pet room is held.
  • If the animal is in distress, call a clinic before you ride to the hotel.
  • Save the hotel address in Korean for the driver.

Reduced to the ride

After the papers, you need a company that will carry the animal and a desk that will check the animal in. Incheon adds import quarantine and a longer ride. Gimpo is a domestic exit closer to Seoul. Neither airport publishes, through this site, a promise that the airport railroad or the first taxi will say yes. Confirm the ride and the room before you land.
