Express Buses and SRT with a Pet
SRT and an express bus are different companies with different carrier lines. The public comparison that can be opened today is a transport-ministry briefing on Korea.kr from 5 September 2022, not a live page on either operator’s site. If the animal is already over those lines, stop here and use the heavier-dog guide. This page is for reading the briefing when the animal might fit.
One briefing, two products
The briefing is Korea.kr briefing of 5 September 2022. It is a government summary of what operators had described. It can go out of date. It is not SRT’s own notice board, and it is not a contract you can wave at a driver. Open it again in the week you travel, then ask the company printed on the ticket.
KORAIL, including KTX, is a third operator. Its petition reply and the question of whether 10 kg includes the box are already on the dog-over-10 kg guide. Carrier dimensions KORAIL publishes for the small-pet case are on the public transport guide. Do not paste either of those onto an SRT ticket or an express-bus ticket.
What the briefing says about SRT
In that 2022 summary, the SRT carrier is about 25 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. The combined weight of carrier and animal is 10 kg or under. The summary also says there is no designated pet seat, the carrier goes under the seat, the carrier stays closed, vaccination papers are part of the preparation, and the animal should not disturb other passengers.
The width figure is one side of a three-side size. It is not a rule that any carrier under 60 cm long is accepted. The weight figure is the carrier and the animal together, in this summary, which is a different sentence from a body-weight guess on a home scale. Ask SRT what document counts as the vaccination papers on the day you ride. This page does not invent a form name, and it does not use an SRT FAQ address that does not open.
What it says about express buses
The same note describes members of the express-bus association, not every bus in Korea. For those members it gives a carrier under 50 × 40 × 20 cm, a combined weight of 10 kg or under, and the possibility of buying an extra seat. It also says companies outside that group can set other conditions.
Read the extra-seat line as a line that sits next to the size and weight lines. The briefing does not say the extra seat erases them. Ask the company named on your ticket how the three lines apply to this animal on this departure. City buses and intercity buses are not this row. An airport limousine is not this row. A weekend plan that mixes them is three questions, not one.
If the animal is over the line
A dog that cannot stay inside those carriers, or that pushes the combined weight over 10 kg in the briefing’s own words, is the subject of the heavier-dog guide. Buying a second seat and hoping is not a procedure this page can confirm. If staff turn the animal away, the refund is that company’s own rule. This page does not predict the refund.
What that note does not settle
The lines this page uses do not include a refund table or a breed ban, and they do not say that a second human seat replaces the weight line. If the animal is a cat, ask whether that company applies the same carrier line. A 2022 summary is not a reason to guess the species. If the company answers with a newer page, that page wins.
Weigh the animal and the box together if you are comparing yourself to the combined 10 kg line. A body weight alone is a different number. Measure all three sides. A box that is short on one side and long on another is not “under the limit” because one side looks small. Write down the company name before you ask, so you are not asking a terminal agent about a different operator’s bus.
How a booking actually fails
The usual failure is a human seat bought first. The pet condition is discovered at the terminal, when the only remaining choice is to leave the animal behind or miss the departure. Weigh the animal and the box before you pay. Measure the box against the three sides in the briefing, then ask that company whether those sides are still the ones they use.
Another failure is treating “express bus” as a single brand. The briefing’s figures are tied to association members. The name on the ticket is the company you ask. A third failure is taking the animal out of the box in the aisle because a passenger wants to see it. The SRT summary says the carrier stays closed.
A ferry to Jeju, and a domestic flight, are not quieter versions of this bus. Those operators publish their own cabin and ship conditions in the air and ship crossings to Jeju. A weekend that starts with this bus still needs a room that has answered in writing, which is the weekend-outside-Seoul guide.
What you book
Use the 5 September 2022 briefing as a comparison: SRT at about 25 × 60 × 30 cm and 10 kg combined; association express buses under 50 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg combined, with an extra-seat line that does not, on the page, replace the weight line. Then ask the company on the ticket. If the animal does not fit, this is the wrong page.
